April is a month when our attention turns to matters of the environment. We celebrate Earth Day in April so it is appropriate for our Collective of photographers to make work that speaks to their connection and their concerns with our Earth.
Trees play a special part in this exhibition. Robert Barry’s tree images reference nature interrupted, Grant Brittain’s trees have been ravaged by man-made fire, Bob Younger’s rows of Almond trees speak to human control. And Andrea Matthies’ toned Cyanotype of a fenced-in Death Valley scene reflects our political anxiety.
There is a love of the beauty of trees here too. Jodie Hulden’s warm photographs describe her affection for oak trees. Barbara Beck’s Glacier National Park landscapes are elegant. A golden, round image by Dave Marsh gives viewers a truly unique way to appreciate our precious trees.
The desert calls to many photographers. It is a place of quiet and solace and of infinite possibilities. You will see a variety of panoramic desert views in monochrome of our southwest made affectionately by artists Keiko Yamasaki, Tom Vancisin, and John Clark. Brandy Sebastian’s images are also of the desert using collaged pieces affixed to the photograph’s surface.
There are several intimate images made with historical and alternative processes. Deb Hellman’s toned Cyanotype seed pods, Stephen Davis’ Cyanotype flowers on coffee filters, and my own Platinum Palladium of a fern are evidence of our Earth’s delicate simplicity.
Earth Day, begun in 1970, has become Earth Month but as photographers who hold nature dear, we hope that this exhibition will help you think kindly about our ‘mother’ Earth all year long.
