Artist Statement:

The photographs that I have included for Earth Matters come from a larger body of work that I call “Ancient Stories.” These photographs explore the ancient ruins, petroglyphs, pictographs and landscapes of the Southwest. I always feel a sense of mystery and awe in the presence of these remnants in the landscape that the original inhabitants left. When I first encountered the pictographs of a person’s hand from many hundreds of years ago, the sense of wonder with the connection to that person was palpable. This person’s mark on the wall was a communication to those of us today, “This is me, I was here.”

This collection of black and white photographs attempts to reveal a little of these mysteries, as well as show the beauty and form of what is left of their lives in the vast southwest.

I used a 4x5 large format camera to obtain the intense detail that comes through in my prints. The prints are made by carefully scanning the original 4x5 negatives at high resolution and processing them for consistency throughout the set. The prints are made with archival pigment ink on Hahnemühle baryta paper.
