Artist Statement:
These images were each taken over ten years ago in either the wild coastal area of Torrey Pines Reserve or in the backcountry of San Diego County. The time factor is important because all the trees depicted here are now gone or represent the many oaks and pines that have since vanished in their habitat. Both a long drought and an ensuing beetle infestation devasted beautiful stands of trees, some that had graced the land for a century. They were sanctuaries. As Terry Tempest Williams wrote in her book Red, “If you know wilderness in the way that you know love, you [will] be unwilling to let it go.” I will never stop photographing wilderness and I will never stop fighting for it.
