Between a Memory and a Dream
As photographers we make images to remember-perhaps an object or a person that is before us but will surely disappear…or transform. We make a record of a place to which we may never return. We sometimes capture that place with our cameras as if we only dreamed it. Misty, foggy, soft focus…all are approaches which convey surreal, dreamlike moments.
In the dream state one is also confronting these ephemeral moments. Gain and loss. Here and gone. Does memory influence dreams? Do dreams influence memory? Scientific studies say both.
Is it possible to understand one without the other?
Tom Petty, in his 1994 song “You don’t Know How it Feels”, sings that he “woke up in between a memory and a dream”. He’s talking about finding himself in an in-between space. Past, present, and uncertainty. Photography is very much about that space. It is memories, it is dreams, and it is often the unknown between.
Our Collective of photographers explore this theme with reverence and with joy, considering experiences from long ago or those things only the unconscious could reveal. The variety here as usual, is fascinating.
