Show Statement:
In this exhibition, our Collective members were asked to create images that respond to the idea of ‘The Nature of Things’. Broadly this can be interpreted as the most basic characteristics of a thing, a place, the human experience and even the universe. As you will see, each of our artists have acknowledged this theme through their own perception and aesthetic.

For many of us, we understand ‘the nature of things’ to be in deep accordance with Nature, a heightened appreciation of our natural surroundings and our place within them. For Keiko Yamasaki, it is the vast star-studded sky above a Yellowstone NP landscape, for Bob Younger it is a single ocean-smoothed stone on the beach at Pt Lobos.

Here you will see detail from the natural world. David Marsh’s toned lumens of leaves, Barbara Beck’s platinum palladiums of a rose, John Clark’s colorful views of flowers and Deb Hellman’s salt print of a Ranunculus all speak to grace found in the simplicity of Nature.

Being in harmony with Nature is seen in Tom Vancisin and Grant Brittains’ flowing water images from Yosemite and Sequoia NP. It is hoped my SX70 diptych of White Oaks gives the viewer my sense of respect for Portland’s Heritage trees. Terry Allen’s images tweak reality using infrared and lean into invisible light and Carla DeDominicis’ work reveals her experience with one on one animal encounters from her travels.

Jodie Hulden, Stephen Davis, and Robert Barry record man’s mark making and intrusion in the landscape. The inherent characteristics of human impact becomes art and science, beauty and trash.

Brandy Sebastian’s portrait work of her grandfather, ‘Pop’, are personal history. Through her photographs we may recognize our own humanity and basic nature.

Please enjoy our Collective’s unique take on The Nature of Things
