Directors Statement: Photography has the capacity to tell sweeping stories and small scale ones. Single images can speak volumes, sequences can take us on a journey. Our Collective photographers dove into the challenge of this theme with passion and commitment each using their own style and process.
Human history is represented here with photographs by John Clark whose fine silver gelatin images of Native American dwellings soar. More history is seen with a ‘portrait’ by Terry Allen of a special place near the Salton Sea built by a man whose devotion to a God of love is full of color and grace. Grant Brittain continues the story of human endeavor with stylish portraits of artists and artisans. Carla DeDominicis’ single night image of men in conversation is a lively narrative of her visit to Cuba.
Stephen Davis’ photographs of decrepit buildings with graffiti speak to our need to leave our mark behind even though we may crumble. Robert Barry’s city strolls also offer colorful evidence of our mark-making.
Small moments abound. Jodie Hulden ‘s poignant ‘Little Corners’ made in Bodie Ghost town reference those who went from golden success to bitter failure. Deb Hellman’s baby shoes are sweet remnants from the past. Barbara Beck’s intimate images show simple and hopeful stories of beauty while Brandy Sebastian’s staged photographs tell the tale of the pain of abandonment.
The land tells stories too. Tom Vancisin’s serene photographs of reflections in Yosemite and my own Cyanotype of trailing rocks on Death Valley’s Racetrack Playa reveal the mystery and elegance of the storied landscape. On an interstellar scale, Keiko Yamasaki’s photographs chronicle the very nexus of time and existence with her stunning photographs of nebulas.
There is much more here for you to take in. Take a look around and find a true story that resonates with you. Donna Cosentino, Director
