(s)Light of Hand 2022 AWARD WINNERS:Lou McCorkle & Marek Matusz
February 11th- March 4th, 2023
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT: On view in this exhibition are the two winners of our 2022 juried exhibition, (S)LIGHT OF HAND. Out of 200 artworks entered, our juror Christina Z Anderson selected Marek Matusz’ highly colored flower still lifes, and as Director I chose Lou McCorkle’s quiet, cyanotype still lifes of natural materials.
I find it fascinating that both artists selected for our awards use the ideal of the ‘Still Life’ as subject and Cyanotype as a base to create their photographic prints. Often there is a much greater disparity between our two choices. But, you will find even though both Matusz and McCorkle begin with a Cyanotype (blueprint) layer, as each artist adds color using gum bichromate pigments (i.e. layers of pigments individually coated, exposed and washed) the results are vastly different.
These processes reach back to the earliest days of photographic printing when discoveries were being made in quick succession. They are time consuming and, I feel, need to fit the subject. Not every alternative process pairs well with every kind of imagery. These two artists have explored the processes with care and conviction. Matusz finds beauty in a bold water-color effect, McCorkle finds mystery and connection in her studied and subdued constructions.
As you view these exceptional photographic creations, please take a moment to consider the artists’ intent and also your reaction to their subject and techniques. What do you see and how does it make you feel? Enjoy the exhibition!
