DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT: When I first conceived this title my thoughts were of not only dark and light within photographs but also the dark and light within ourselves. What you will see in our exhibition is a mix of both.
Many of us connect deeply with the landscape and so our tendency is to work within what Mother Earth and available light gifts to us. Some of us on the other hand, relish digging deeper into the psyche and so you will see photographs that speak to exploring human-made spaces as well as human interaction.
Our goal as a group and as individual artists is to create in a way that seeks to enlighten ourselves and our audience. The use of chiaroscuro, that is the use of light and dark in an artwork, is an idea that appears to have begun in the Renaissance with Da Vinci and Caravggio, although some herald it back to the ancient Greeks. The play of light and dark in a work of art adds depth and volume but it also separates subject from background and creates emphasis.
Take a look at the photographs on our walls and think about what you see and what you like. Then ask yourself why you responded positively to a particular photograph. Then look to see who the photographer is and how they used The Darkness and The Light to create interest. I hope you find great enjoyment in viewing our Collective group show.
