The Collective: All the Little Things

Director's Statement:
A photographer’s life is made up of noticing the mundane-the quotidian pieces of our environment that are elevated through the act of turning our lens toward them.
You will see a number of ways our photographers have interpreted this concept. Keiko Yamasaki sees the little things in the stuff our universe is made of. Tom Vancisin and Deb Hellman see uplifting beauty in small flowers. Robert Barry photographs the little things added to city walls, and in the streets, Grant Brittain sees the moves that skaters make. Barbara Beck and Brandy Sebastian create hand-made art from small bits of life they find around them. With her Polaroid camera, Andrea Matthies notices what nature shows off in California’s Eastern Sierra. At home, John Clark has fun with bits of light and shadow. Robert Younger fills his viewfinder with found plants and city scenes. Dave Marsh notices a solitary swallow on a branch in Big Bear. Jodie Hulden goes to her ‘happy place’ in the mountains and makes images of the plant forms she finds there. My own entry is about the small gesture of a little girl’s hands
These little things make up our everyday experience. They delight and engage us if we pay attention. What small things do you see around you?
