Zabriskie Point DVNP

Zabriskie Point, one of the most iconic views in Death Valley. A chain-link fence cuts across the frame, keeping us out and changing the way we experience the landscape.
The fence turns something vast and wild into something off-limits and controlled. Maybe it’s there for safety, maybe to protect the land. Either way, it creates distance and makes us question what it means to admire a location without really being able to experience it
For me, this image speaks to the barriers that shape our relationship with the land. It captures the contrast between the urge to explore and the reality of being held back. With recent government policies and possible national park worker shortages, there’s a growing risk of increased restrictions and reduced accessibility to public lands. Scenes like this could become more common, turning once-accessible places into views seen only from behind a fence.
