From a human perspective, time is a river flowing from the remembered past, through a fleeting present, and into an anticipated future, its pace and meaning defined entirely by the person who perceives it. From a geologic perspective, however, this human-centric notion evaporates, and time becomes an immense, tangible narrative written in stone. Its chapters are measured not in moments but in eons, its passage marked not by feeling but by the slow, inexorable processes of erosion, sedimentation, and the fossilized remains of life that flourished and vanished long before human thought. Within this planetary chronicle, the entirety of human existence would barely occupy the final, wafer-thin page. Thus, while philosophy grapples with the why of our personal temporal experience, geology presents the indifferent what—a physical record that dwarfs our fleeting perceptions into near insignificance.
