Artist’s Statement: 2021
I created these wet cyanotype photograms in my backyard. I am driven by process and the peace this work brings me by getting me outside to enjoy my property in Michigan. I gather flowers, leaves, bits of nature and plants from my garden.
The wet cyanotype process involves me coating watercolor paper by hand with cyanotype chemistry. Before the chemical dries, I choose placement of plants for composition.
My intuition continues as I choose from my array of spices and chemicals to create results with visual interest. The prints are exposed by sun, for hours at a time, and developed by water.
Artist Bio: 2021
Born 1973 in northern California, Rachelle Evanoff began her education in art photography at an early age. During Desert Storm, she joined the United States Marine Corps as a photojournalist and was trained in print and broadcast journalism at the Defense Information School.
Evanoff has been a member of the Society of Photographic Education (SPE) since 1996, and has attended numerous regional and national conferences while participating in portfolio reviews.
The Toledo Museum of Art awarded Evanoff with the Palmer Scholarship in 2009 for her proposal to conduct photographic research in Glacier National Park and to study the effects of global climate change. For over a decade, she has produced varied works of art, including sculptures, as a result of making repeated trips. She is currently working on multiple book projects with portraits and her images of the glacial landscape.
Evanoff earned a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in New Media along with a BA in Art History. At the time of her 2012 graduation from the University of Toledo, she was recognized as the most outstanding student of the College of Visual and Performing Arts as well as the most outstanding student of the Department of Art.
Since 2014, at the Collingwood Arts Center in Toledo, Ohio, Evanoff has built an expansive studio space with galleries and darkroom/dimroom facilities for creation of handmade traditional and alternative photographic prints. She runs a visiting artists program to share her space with invited artists.
Over the years, Evanoff has exhibited artwork in many galleries nationwide. She has continued her art photography education through workshops at VASA, Photographer’s Formulary, Penland School of Craft and Nord Photography with esteemed artists and critics: A.D. Coleman, Christina Z. Anderson, Dan Burkholder, Emma Powell, Elizabeth Avedon and Jill Enfield. She regularly participates in photography critique groups with Jennifer Murray through FILTER Photo and Elisabeth Aanes through Nord Photography. Evanoff has been a member of the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) since 1996, and has attended numerous regional and national conferences while participating in portfolio reviews.
Currently, Evanoff resides in the country in southeast Michigan on an expansive estate with a pond, woods and a large garden. She spends time with family, including dogs, a cat, and a flock of chickens and ducks. The flora and fauna in her surrounding area add subjects to her work. Evanoff has been enjoying creating wet cyanotypes at home and is currently making a book of images she creates during the process.
