These pieces come from the Gestures subset of my series Language Acquisition. After my first few years of studying photography in the late 1990’s, I began to shy away from the darkroom. I wished to see the physical mark in my work, and to create objects, but photography as I knew it felt mass-produced and devoid of this materiality. Learning to create chemigrams years later satisfied these needs, while still being rooted in the alluring alchemy of light-sensitive paper. My gestures are spontaneous documents of a moment, either drawing through spray cooking oil as a resist, or mark-making directly with a stick of butter.
