Process:
The Mordançage process involves the reprocessing of a silver gelatin print (a traditional darkroom image) which lifts the paper’s emulsion into thin veils that can be manipulated by the photographer. After regular darkroom processing, the print is placed in a bath that both bleaches the image and begins to bubble the emulsion, separating it from the paper. A warm bath continues to separate the emulsion from the paper, forming veils in the darkest areas of the image. The print is then reprocessed in traditional chemicals and, after a lengthy wash cycle, print can have its veils manipulated by way of brushes, water and needle to suggest movement, tear away portions or completely remove the veils.
