Artist Statement:
A Self-Portrait: A Map
Books have filled my life since childhood. When our family immigrated to North America in the early 1970s, we didn’t bring very much due to distance of the journey and due to the rules of immigration at the time. However, my father always made sure we had our most favorite books. I remember him cherishing his books, both the contents and the textures of the worn pages of his favorite passages. This memory has and will always remain with me.
This series which I completed in 2008 is a self-portrait.
I have come to realize that there is a symbolic relationship between my books and my state of mind. This is a collection of books that have become a part of my life physically in my space and also as a guide, a road map if you will, of where I have been, what I know and who I am.
