He began his newspaper career in 1972 at the Vista Press, 1 year after his tour of duty in Vietnam. He went on to the Oceanside Blade-Tribune, the San Diego Union-Tribune, before spending 32 years with the L.A. Times on assignments across the U.S. and in 35 countries. The soul of his video and still reporting were social conflicts and the causes and consequences of human migration for survival. In 2003, he was awarded the Pulitzer for Feature Photography about Central American child migration and the 2014 Pulitzer Finalist for video and stills of child migrant farmworkers in Mexico. Bartletti resides in the same home and gardens in Vista for the past 64 years, is married to Diana, has 2 grown children and 4 grandsons.
