This image features the iconic outdoor movie theater ldquo;Cinema Under The Starsrdquo;. On the marquee we see the remnants of the schedule ldquo;Fri Satrdquo; at the top, ldquo;8:00rdquo; at the bottom, and the new condition ldquo;Temporarily Closedrdquo;, front and center. These images are personal to me because they are of places in my neighborhood of Mission Hills in San Diego, just a few minutesrsquo; walk from my home, places in which I have memories of gathering with loved ones, neighbors, and friends. They also represent a shared universal subject of the closed businesses, restaurants, and institutions in everyonersquo;s neighborhoods, not just in San Diego, but around the world. What is personal to me is also shared globally. This is what is happening everywhere. Just nine months ago, I attended the launch event of the SDIFFrsquo;s annual feStivale, which was hosted at Cinema Under The Stars. As I stared at the closed cinema, and when I decided to make this photograph, it felt like a tribute, an honor, a wish for the day the marquee will depict the movie titles again. The memory of the launch event danced in my mind. I was filled with nostalgia, concern, fear, and hope. was hosted at Cinema Under The Stars.
