Chrysotype & Chrysotype Over Inkjet Process:
Similar in many ways to the classic platinum print, chrysotype is a 19th century process by which gold is used to make a photographic print on paper. Chrysotype is unique in the ways that humidity affects the final print’s colors. Humidify your paper a great deal and you’ll end up with deep blues and blacks. Put your coated paper in a chamber of desiccants and your print will develop beautiful mauve tones. For “Dark Canyon Clearing”, I chose to leave my coated paper at room humidity and develop in oxalic acid to achieve the blue-pink split unique to chrysotype. For “Off Season”, I separated the color channels of my image in photoshop and printed the yellow and magenta layers as an inkjet print on Hahnemühle Platinum Rag. After coating with my chrysotype solution, I humidified the paper so that the chrysotype layer would print entirely blue and black. The print achieves its full color range through the use of a digital negative of just the blue and black channels, completing the CMYK gamut when printed over the inkjet layer.


Artist Bio:
Thomas Callahan is a photographer with a focus on experimental processes, memory, and the American vernacular. He resides in South Bend, Indiana where he is an MFA candidate in Photography at the University of Notre Dame. Callahan earned his BFA from Montana State University in Integrated Lens-Based Media in 2021. He has exhibited his photography and video works nationally. This is Callahan’s first exhibition in his childhood home state of California.
