At the crack of dawn, a mother carries her daughter around the end of the U.S./Mexico border fence from Ejido Jacumé, Baja, Mexico and into Jacumba Hot Springs, California, U.S.A. on January 19, 2024. She and her husband flew from Bogota, Colombia and landed at the Tijuana airport during the night. A smuggler charged $600 a head for the 65-mile drive to this spot. They’re about the join a line of other illegal immigrants walking towards an open-air holding area where they’ll surrender to U.S. Border Patrol agents. The unidentified woman later said that her dream was to reunite with relatives in Chicago and eventually be granted asylum.
