Wearing what is probably the only clothes they own, 5 boys from Guatemala tiptoe around a Cadillac and gesture to be chosen for a day’s work. A homeowner stopped at this informal curbside hiring hall at the gate to the ultra-wealthy enclave of Fairbanks Ranch, California on May 4, 1988. The desperate teens can only afford to live in an open air, makeshift squatter’s camp in a canyon nearby.
