Nearly 150 men, women, and children from a dozen countries line up in the pre-dawn chill on the Arizona side of the Colorado River near Yuma on December 17, 2022. Throughout the night Mexican smugglers directed them to the end of the 30’ high fence where they voluntarily surrendered to U.S. Border Patrol agents. The daily volume of asylum-seekers has been so great here this year that the border sector chief brought in portable toilets, barrels of drinking water and a shade canopy. The view is from a drone.
