The headlights of a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle shine at the end station for a crowd of immigrants walking along the concertina wire topped border fence in Jacumba Hot Springs, California on January 19, 2024. They found their way from countries around the world with directions from migrants who preceded them, and a vast network of internet blogs. Every day of every week Mexican cartel smugglers deliver 1000s of asylum-seekers to a nearby gap in the boundary fence. All have been led to believe they will be able to travel, live and work in the United States while their asylum cases are pending. The backlog is nearly 10 years.
