]]>ARTIST STATEMENT:
Though the COVID-19 pandemic situation has been the morning coffee of every citizen in the world, a series of other inevitable crisis mount onto the lives of many people. This photographic series is about my crisis. It’s about liberating the feelings of anger and sadness through poetic photography after a traumatic period in which I was a victim of domestic violence in the middle of this global emergency. The embedment of poems into each photograph is the representation of the feelings and thoughts that haunt every second of my life. This, to a certain extent, deprives the viewer of self-interpretation, because unlike other work, this is one I would like to portray concretely, with the goal to create for the viewer the visual representation of the suffering a victim of violence undergoes and that in effect, the viewer rise to action against these unjustified acts.

]]>Trapped: Living through a Pandemic

ARTIST STATEMENT:
The Coronavirus has been spreading rapidly and has taken a lot of lives. Throughout this time, I’ve felt lonely, unsafe, and trapped. I’m at high risk because I have a heart disease and this has made my experience throughout this pandemic very hard to deal with. I have felt alone because the people I live with aren’t at high risk so they don’t understand how I feel about this. I feel unsafe because they are still working and that puts my life at risk every day. I feel trapped because I’m unable to see my family throughout this time and all I want to do is feel their comfort. I feel the most trapped because I’m locked in a house with just my mind as my company and all I do is get lost in it. Why must this situation affect me so much? Do I fear death? I wonder, what if I do die? I am trying to fight the urge to think of these questions but the more I see these negative outcomes, the more I see myself have a negative outcome.

]]>ARTIST STATEMENT:
A Developing Crisis explores my personal experiences with the current events brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The underlying issue of a global health crisis is one that affects many communities and individuals around the world. This work touches on society, personal anxieties, residual effects of a health crisis, memory, and potential viral contaminations. This project juxtaposes personal reflection with photographs structured as diptychs to illustrate the divergent elements of internal feelings against external perceptions.

This project also expands on my investigation of the passage of time and the issues of reality and memory, and the contradictions where these intersect. I use expired 120mm analog film as a physical representation for past experiences. The unpredictability of the expired film provides parallels to the inexactitude of memory, and the decay of the film corresponds with the decomposition of past experiences.

The layered narratives are a response to a combination of current circumstances; a community that continues to be impacted by a pandemic, governmental agencies encrypting the facts about potential dangers, anxiety brought on by the unknown, and the transitional nature of memory over time in the face of an unknown future.

In nature your mind can find a sense of peace, a confidence that there is balance and support in its foundation and an assurance that the next day arrives without fail.

While you are sitting by yourself on the lake shore, nature has a way of letting you know that you are not alone. Her signs may be subtle but they are abundant if you watch for them.

When times are the craziest, you just need to find a quiet place. This has been my quiet place.

]]>ARTIST STATEMENT:
We were a few days into the COVID-19 shutdown of California and the corresponding requirement to shelter-in-place. Within minutes an approaching springtime storm produced these clouds. Sitting on my porch, I didn’t have time to do anything but pick up my phone and make these photographs. It was all over in less than three minutes. (The adage about the “best camera” was once again reinforced.)

In the last few weeks of quarantine I’ve struggled to understand why I was wholly compelled to photograph these storm clouds over our canyon. The sunlight and clouds seemed at once to be in a violent struggle for control of the skies, and also in a beautiful dance. Yet, the dance was destined to end with the irrepressible Pacific storm off the coast.

Though I’m sure there is more to learn, that day, for those few minutes, the clouds and sun mirrored what was happening in me as my heart and mind struggled, and danced, to reconcile the inexorable impact of this disease on the world and my art.
