Every photograph has within it the seeds of creative transformation, whether that’s explored on the iPhone, through darkroom techniques, or — as in the case of this workshop — within the limitless world of painting. Using cold wax medium and oil paint transform a photo into a hand-painted work of art. Along the way, you will be guided toward a painter’s mindset — seeing color and texture with a fresh approach. Hands-on participation during this class is a delightful way to get started.

Applying cold wax is a simple process, mixing small amounts of the creamy medium with traditional oil paint. No painting experience is necessary. Simply come with a curiosity about the technique.

Each participant will be guided to paint both an abstract and a photo-based painting

using either their own image or a photo that is provided.

  • Observe examples of paintings and pickup fresh approaches to enhancing images.
  • Discover simple application tools such as palette knives, plastic wrap and popsicle sticks that make painting approachable and easy to do.
  • Find ways to mix colors that build a “palette” of paints with subtle, connected shades.
  • Investigate a variety of options for every photograph.
  • Begin to incorporate alternative artistic interpretations to your work such as an impressionistic approach or a minimalist simplicity.
  • Learn how easy it is to blend multiple images using cold wax and translucent tissue.

Prerequisites: No previous painting experience is needed.  A “Preparing for Class” letter will be sent to participants before the workshop begins. No preparation is needed unless the participant is using their own photo image for the session. Before class, directions will be sent on how to print a photograph that’s ready to paint but sample images will be provided for anyone who does not want to print ahead of time.
