"Cinema Under The Stars, Temporarily Closed"
Lamia Khorshid

This image features the iconic outdoor movie theater “Cinema Under The Stars”. On the marquee we see the remnants of the schedule “Fri Sat” at the top, “8:00” at the bottom, and the new condition “Temporarily Closed”, front and center. These images are personal to me because they are of places in my neighborhood of Mission Hills in San Diego, just a few minutes’ walk from my home, places in which I have memories of gathering with loved ones, neighbors, and friends. They also represent a shared universal subject of the closed businesses, restaurants, and institutions in everyone’s neighborhoods, not just in San Diego, but around the world. What is personal to me is also shared globally. This is what is happening everywhere. Just nine months ago, I attended the launch event of the SDIFF’s annual feStivale, which was hosted at Cinema Under The Stars. As I stared at the closed cinema, and when I decided to make this photograph, it felt like a tribute, an honor, a wish for the day the marquee will depict the movie titles again. The memory of the launch event danced in my mind. I was filled with nostalgia, concern, fear, and hope. was hosted at Cinema Under The Stars.
